What a useful operations dashboard should actually show

Begin with decisions, not charts
A dashboard can display accurate information and still be unhelpful. If nobody can describe the decision a metric supports, the screen may be reporting activity rather than guiding work.
Ask what a responsible person needs to notice early enough to act.
Useful operational signals
The exact measures depend on the process, but good operational views tend to make flow and ownership visible.
- Work waiting beyond an agreed point.
- Items blocked by missing information or a decision.
- Current owner and next required action.
- Exceptions that need judgement rather than automatic handling.
- A trend that changes a real staffing or process decision.
Protect context and definitions
Every measure needs an agreed definition, trustworthy source and owner. A polished chart cannot repair inconsistent status values or incomplete records.
Show enough context to act without exposing personal or commercially sensitive data that the viewer does not need.
